What is Microblading?
Microblading is a cosmetic technique that creates the appearance of fuller, perfectly shaped eyebrows by applying a semi-permanent makeup.
The treatment has taken off in the last few years as more and more women have discovered the incredible results. Microblading is popular among women all over the world and has been featured in numerous media outlets, including Glamour, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, The Today Show, and more.
Celebrities like Madonna, Lena Dunham, and Bella Thorne have given rave reviews for the treatment, catapulting it into the national spotlight.
But what is microblading exactly, and how does it work?
Here's everything you need to know.
Explain it to me; what is microblading? Microblading is a specialized eyebrow treatment that adds pigment into the superficial layers of the skin to resemble eyebrow hair.
The term "microblade" refers to the simple, hand-controlled tool that the technician uses to add pigment into your eyebrows. The tool has very tiny needles that form a blade that is used to make very fine lines in your eyebrows into which color pigments are then deposited.
With pigment added, the fine lines resemble real hair so that your eyebrows look fuller.
So, it's kind of like a tattoo? Yes, sort of—the technique is very similar to tattooing and some women will casually refer to microblading as "eyebrow tattoos". But whereas tattoos are performed by mechanized needles, microblading is done with a handheld tool to give the technician even greater control. Of note, the pigment does remain in the skin as long as an ordinary tattoo does.
What are the benefits? What is microblading really designed to do? Simple: give you beautiful, fuller-looking eyebrows!
Here are the primary reasons why the treatment has become so popular:
[note the space here]
Eyebrow restoration
Many women use microblading to restore the look of their eyebrows after experiencing hair loss from tweezing, age, or other factors.
No more daily makeup
Since the pigment is semi-permanent, you don't have to worry about applying makeup every time you want fuller-looking eyebrows. A writer for Cosmopolitan noted after her treatment, "I don't plan on using another brow product again".
Overall enhancement and shape
Even if you already have full eyebrows, they may not be the shape you'd prefer. Microblading can enhance the overall look of your brows and give you a shape that's perfect for your face and style.
What can I expect during treatment? Microblading treatments are very simple and can be worked into your schedule just as easily as other beauty treatments. Here's what a typical treatment appointment looks like:
Overview
Our microblading treatments require two visits.
Your initial appointment will take approximately 90 minutes.
Planning
We will consult with you to get an idea of how you want your "dream eyebrows" to look. We will then begin to design the shape of your new brows...with a brow pencil. We utilize the 3D eyebrow technique by applying hair strokes across eyebrow ridges, thus creating a realistic, 3D effect. The actual depth of the microblade will also vary on each hair stroke for even more realistic results.
Treatment
A medical grade topical numbing cream is applied, which numbs the area to ensure your comfort during the treatment.
We begin your treatment by using a microblade to make tiny cuts into your approved design[KW1] of the drawn-on eyebrows, while creating hair strokes. We then apply our pigments over the top of the tiny hair strokes. After a few minutes of allowing the color to settle, we will wipe away the excess pigment and that's it! You're ready to show off your beautiful new eyebrows to the world.
Touch-up appointment
A touch-up visit is usually required about 30 days after the initial visit. This allows the technician to see how the color has settled and make corrections.
What happens after treatment? Here are a few things to keep in mind after the initial appointment. You may notice a little pinkness around your eyebrows upon completion of your first treatment. You'll notice that this will disappear within a couple of hours. Overall, you will LOVE your brows immediately!
Initially, your eyebrows will appear darker. During the next week to ten days, you'll notice a lightening/softening of color as you'll lose approximately 30% of the color during this time.
You should avoid getting your eyebrows wet and avoid touching or rubbing them during the first ten days.
How long do the results last? The results from microblading vary by person and are generally designed to last 12 months before requiring a maintenance procedure. This means no more worrying about using brow products every time you go out! You can also extend the results even further by scheduling additional touch-up visits over time. Microblading is designed to be semi-permanent, so the color won't remain forever without additional treatments.
Am I the right candidate for microblading? Actually, there is no single "perfect" candidate for microblading. Any woman (or man) who wants fuller-looking eyebrows, perfectly shaped to their wishes, is ideal for the treatment. As mentioned above, many women choose the treatment because their hair growth has slowed or stopped due to plucking and they're tired of using other products to tediously "draw" their brows. But that's just one scenario. Microblading is popular among women of all backgrounds and situations.
So, it's not just for celebrities? Absolutely not! While you will probably continue to hear about more celebrities trying microblading, this treatment is not just for Hollywood. It has become a go-to cosmetic treatment for women across the spectrum. And you don't need to be a star to afford it, either. Just as one example, microblading is popular among brides (and bridal party members) who want to look their best on the big day. It's also popular with working women, stay-at-home moms, businesswomen, and so many others. So, if you love the look of full, beautiful eyebrows—and you don't want to bother with other eyebrow products all the time—then chances are you are the perfect candidate for microblading.

*******Microblading/Microfeathering Post-care:
• Day one: Gently apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline), which is your aftercare balm, with clean, washed hands or sterile Q-Tips for the rest of the day and at bedtime. Make certain it is not contaminated or old/used. If you must wash your face or shower, apply it liberally prior to getting wet.
• Do not get your brows wet for at least 7 days. This could rinse out the pigment from your newly tattooed brows! This includes pools, saunas, steam rooms/baths, or sweat. Be sure to apply balm before showering and avoid putting your face directly under the shower head. When shampooing hair, place a dry washcloth over brows if it’s within the 7-day period. You can, however, clean your brows daily by very gently dabbing with a warm, wet washcloth or a makeup wipe.
• Beginning on day two: Maintain protection on your brows with the aftercare balm. Reapply 3-5 times per day until scabs have fully healed. Apply just enough of the balm to moisten them; if you can still see ointment, there is no need to apply more.
• Do not wipe off aftercare balm from your eyebrows. Let it absorb into the skin.
• Do NOT pick, scratch, or rub your eyebrows. When healing, they will get itchy – please resist the temptation to scratch them!
• Avoid facial cleansers or soap on brows for 10 days – and definitely don’t exfoliate! I recommend gentle use of washcloths or facial wipes to remove makeup and cleanse face.
• Do not wear makeup over your brows for a minimum of 5 days. After the 5-day period, you can use brow powder to correct any patchiness; however, do NOT wash the powder off.
• Avoid excessive sweating and sun exposure/tanning for at least 10 days. This could cause your eyebrows to fade. While outdoors, apply sunscreen to brows.
VERY IMPORTANT: There are stages to the healing process. Initially brows will become very dark, then light, sometimes appearing patchy or as though the hair stroke has disappeared – don’t panic! The color will return around the 10th day once fully healed. Please trust the process and don’t be alarmed if they healed patchy – this is what the touch-up appointment is for! One follow-up touch-up is included in the initial fee, at which time the entire brow is microbladed again and any permanent gaps of color will be corrected.
